At winter's end,
on April 7, 1938, returning from a North American lecture tour, Grey Owl stood in snow-shoes on the frozen surface of Lake Ajawaan for the last time. Six days later in his cabin, Beaver Lodge, he stepped foot on the ' Long Portage '. He died from exhaustion brought on by the very lecture tours that enabled " his " beaver { Canada's national emblem, the animal supreme of all the forests, that was the wilderness personified } to rest in peace.

Once again the Canadian Spring would awaken in song.
Yes, I have seen the movie " Grey Owl "! Now as I gaze at the paper in front of me, in a kind of cinematic overlay, I watch canoes gliding smoothly across the silver screen. Looking through the vision, I " see " Wachigabau Lac. Then the images dissolve and once again to my ears comes LaFleur's hearty greeting.

" Bo'Jou', bo'jou! Keewaydin!! By gar!!! I one time knew Grey Owl!"
