Grey Owl

I invite you to explore the links below and continue to paddle and portage the North Woods with Grey Owl and the Northwest Wind.

" RULER THOU SHALT BE HENCE FORWARD
OF THE NORTHWEST WIND KEEWAYDIN "

is carved in wood over the entry to Keewaydin Canoe Camp in the heart of Grey Owl's wilderness. The author ran his finger over Grey Owl's name - found on "the boards" in the lodge for guiding Keewaydin in 1910 - 1911.

GREY OWL LINKS

Grey Owl's Hastings - This is my favorite Grey Owl Website. From here you can learn all about Grey Owl, order his books, and the movie " Grey Owl " [ At the 24th annual American Indian Film Festival of 1999 Annie Galipeau recieved the Best Actress Award and Lord Attenborough won the Award for Best Director! ]

Keewaydin Camps On Lake Dunmore, Vermont - The North Woods has greatly changed since the golden days of wilderness tripping in wood and canvas canoes. Only in a " living history " way is it still possible to experience Grey Owl's North Woods.
Keewaydin Camps in Vermont and Keewaydin Wilderness Trips in Quebec with whom Paul Hammersten tripped during their twilight era of the wood and canvas canoe [ 1961 - 1979 ] continues to travel the north woods... but, sadly the twilight has faded and they no longer canoe in the traditional way.

Keewaydin Canoe Camp - Keewaydin Canoe Camp in Ontario, Canada had hoped to return to the pre-1980's days of tripping entirely with wood and canvas canoes. Now that this camp is owned by the same foundation that runs Dunmore Keewaydin and Keewaydin Wilderness Trips, it's twilight era of tripping exclusively in wood and canvas has assuredly come to the end.

Wooden Canoe Heritage Association - Here you can learn all about the canoeing heritage in North America.

Asante Papa! - Asante Papa! is the web site for Paul Hammersten's ground breaking book about Ernest Hemingway. You might be surprised to know that Papa Hemingway knew the Northwest Wind Keewaydin!

The Song Of Hiawatha - This poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was Grey Owl's favorite and Ernest Hemingway's { see Asante Papa! } as it is Paul's.
